Field Trips
When : 29 - 30 April 2006
Where : Pontian & Mersing Johor
Who : Azmi, Rashid, Eugene, Zul, Zahar and Lim
Target : Parosphromenus tweediei, Betta tomi, Betta persephone, Betta bellica

The return of the tweediei.....after numerous attempt in finding this lill jewel from the Johor state.
A collaboration effort with 3 professionals from our neighbouring country, with the help of Mr Lim from Penang, who is doing a research in the Betta pugnax group, Dzul from Kuala Lumpur and Dr Zahar from Terengganu.

The main target fish for this trip are the Parosphromenus tweediei and also Betta tomi.

After much corresponding among us, we all have decided to meet up at Pontian Johor at 1030 hrs.
Myself and Azmi rode up and met them at Pekan Nenas instead.
After a big brunch we headed to our location leaded by Lim.

The guys on arriving at the 1st location, getting ready to get wet.

Within 2 mins I heard the cry from Dzul and Azmi for our most wanted and long awaited catch, which we could only get 2 specimens after 6 trips looking for it.

Biotope of P.tweediei at the 1st location in Pekan Nenas

Parosphromenus tweediei was quite abundance in that stream where we caught 20 odd specimens but most of them are of small in sizes. I was quite surprised to see the biotope in an open area, was expecting that the biotope to be in a more shady forested area.

Here are some of the photos that were taken at the spot.

Our catch of the day, the long awaited P.tweediei

P.hexazona

Betta pulchra

Belontia hasselti

After about an hour or so, Lim decided to go to the next location which is about a few miles away as the current location the water was a bit too deep and most of the time we had to struggle with the depth.

Below is the biotope of the second location for the P.tweediei, it is still about the samesurrounding as the 1st location but this location is very very much near to a residential area which is just about a hundred meters away sharing the same river.

The 2nd location is much better as the river is only waist deep. And also for a typical paros habitat, a slow flowing river with lots of long hairgrass or rather plants for them to hide. Water parameters reads pH4, TDS 110ppm, temperature at 25°.

Other fishes living in the same river are mainly chocolate gouramis, p.hexazona, betta pulchra and b.pugnax.

In action

We call it a day after an hour of scooping. Smiles were on our faces as it was a vey successful one indeed. As the sun has risen way beyond our heads, we packed and had lunch at the nearest town. Azmi and I headed home to Singapore as we both had prior arrangement in the evening leaving the Dzul, Lim and Zahar heading towards Johor Baru.

The next day 30th April is the quest for Betta tomi at the Northeast of Johor.

ok guys,
Thats the end for this trip..
